Unpacking More Than My Suitcase: What Five Days Away Taught Me About Protecting My Peace

3 min read

Recently, my husband and I spent five days cruising to the Dominican Republic and Bimini.

There was sunshine, beautiful water, good food, laughter, new people, and something I think

many of us don't get nearly enough of, permission to simply be.

No packed schedules or long list of things that needed my attention.

Just space.

And somewhere between the ocean views, slowing down, enjoying good food, and allowing

myself to be present, I realized I was unpacking something long before I ever returned home and opened my suitcase. PEACE!

Sometimes You Don't Know How Much You're Carrying, because  we are so accustomed to carrying things that we stop noticing their weight.

Responsibilities. Expectations. Deadlines. Other people's needs. Family concerns. Work. The mental list that keeps running even when we're technically "resting.”

Some of those things are simply part of life. But others? We've been carrying them for so long that we've forgotten we have the option to put them down.

That's one of the gifts of stepping away. It creates enough distance for you to ask:

What have I been carrying that is costing me my peace?

For me, those five days weren't about escaping my life. I love the life I've built. They were about stepping outside of my normal rhythm long enough to hear myself again.

There is a difference.

Peace Doesn't Always Look Like Silence

Sometimes we imagine peace as complete stillness: a quiet room, meditation, solitude, or a day when absolutely nothing is happening.

But peace can be joyful, laughter, sitting in the sunshine with nowhere you need to rush off to next, or evening doing the electric slide all night long! 😊

Peace isn't always the absence of activity. Sometimes it's the absence of pressure.

That distinction stayed with me.

The Real Question Comes After the Vacation

It's easy to feel peaceful when you're looking at turquoise water and somebody else is cooking dinner.

The challenge comes when you get home.

The suitcase gets unpacked. The laundry gets washed. The emails are waiting and the calendar fills back up. Life resumes.

So, I've been thinking less about how to recreate vacation and more about how to protect what vacation reminded me of.

Maybe protecting our peace means leaving some margin on the calendar.

Maybe it's turning off the phone.

Maybe it's recognizing that every problem presented to us doesn't automatically become ours to solve.

And sometimes protecting our peace means paying attention to the relationships, environments, habits, and even thoughts that continually leave us depleted.

Peace requires boundaries and it also requires intention.

What Are You Ready to Leave Behind?

As September comes to an end, maybe we don't need to rush immediately into the next thing.

Maybe there's something we need to unpack first.

What frustrated you this month? Or drained you?

What did you learn about yourself?

What are you holding onto simply because you've always carried it?

And perhaps most importantly:

What would happen if you put it down?

You don't have to wait for a cruise, a vacation, or the perfect circumstances to begin protecting your peace.

Sometimes it starts with one boundary.

One honest conversation.

One afternoon of rest.

One decision that says, I don't have to carry this anymore.

Making Room for Something Sweeter

Here's what I'm learning: when we put down what has been weighing us down, we make room for something else.

More joy.

More laughter.

More rest.

More small moments to appreciate.

And that's the beautiful thing about peace, it doesn't just remove something from our lives. It creates space for something better.

So, as I finish unpacking from five wonderful days away, I'm bringing home more than memories.

I'm bringing home a reminder:

Protect your peace. Make room for what fills you back up. And don't feel guilty about enjoying a little sweetness along the way.

October is coming.

And I have a feeling we're going to talk a lot more about that sweetness.

Reflection for the Month

Before you move into October, take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:

What am I ready to stop carrying, and what do I want to make room for instead?

Write it down.

Then give yourself permission to leave something behind.

Transformation from the inside out.
