The Joy of Traveling – One “Hello” at a Time

There is something incredibly refreshing about stepping away from the demands of everyday life and allowing yourself to simply experience the world. I was recently blessed to spend seven unforgettable days on a Mediterranean Cruise, and while the breathtaking views, beautiful ports, and amazing food were unforgettable, what stayed with me the most were the people.

Traveling has a beautiful way of reminding us that the world is both big and wonderfully connected. Whether I was enjoying time with friends, exploring a new city, or sharing a smile with someone whose language I didn't speak, I was reminded that human connection doesn't require perfection, it simply requires openness.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is learning how to greet people in their own language. Such a small gesture often creates such a meaningful moment:

  • English: Hello

  • French: Bonjour

  • Spanish: Hola

  • Italian: Ciao

Each greeting opened the door to a smile, a conversation, or a shared laugh. It reminded me that although our cultures, traditions, and languages may differ, kindness is universal.

As a therapist, I often encourage others to be intentional about caring for their mental health. This trip reminded me that travel itself can be a form of wellness. It invites us to slow down, unplug, laugh more, and become curious again. It expands our perspective, reduces stress, and encourages us to think beyond our daily routines.

Perhaps the greatest gift of my Mediterranean cruise wasn't the destinations. It was the reminder that peace begins with connection. Every conversation, every shared meal, and every simple "hello" reinforced that when we choose curiosity over judgment and new connections over fear, we create a little more peace in our own hearts and in the world around us.

So, this summer, whether your journey takes you across the ocean or just across town, don't just collect passport stamps or photographs. Collect moments! Make a new Connection. Learn a new greeting. Share a smile. 😊

You may discover that the greatest souvenir you bring home isn't something you can hold in your hands; it's the renewed joy, peace, and perspective you carry in your heart, one "hello" at a time.

So true, and I love it when I speak and someone smiles. It's almost like they were not expecting me to say anything! Showing yourself friendly is such a joy!
